Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center Featured on the Profiles Series on the Discovery Channel

KNOXVLLE—The Profiles Series has selected Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center as the best model for breast centers in the U.S. They featured the center on the Discovery Channel on May 26, 2010.
 
"I interviewed many breast centers across the country and was moved by all of them," said Janice Seitz, Associate Producer of the Profiles Series. "I chose Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center because of Dr. Kozlowski's passion for addressing the anxiety that accompanies a woman's breast cancer screening and diagnoses by streamlining the entire process . . . My hope is to see this model duplicated across the country."

Local Medical Assistant Receives State Recognition

KNOXVILLE—LeAnne Limburg of Knoxville's Premier Surgical Associates was named Certified Medical Assistant of the Year by the Tennessee Society of Medical Assistants (TSMA) at their annual state meeting. The presentation was made during the installation of officers banquet held Saturday, May 15, at Cleveland State Community College.
 
Limburg earned her Medical Assistant degree from South College in 2000. She completed the two-year program and qualified for state certification. In order to maintain her certificate, she completes 60 hours of continuing education every five years.
 
Limburg began her career at Premier Surgical Associates and has been assisting Dr. Kevin Zirkle for the past four years. "LeAnne is a great asset to our office and our patients," said Zirkle. "She is definitely deserving of this award."
 
A ten-year member of TSMA, Limburg was also elected secretary for the state organization at the annual meeting. She will serve a two-year term. Her future plans include returning to South College to complete the Physician Assistant Studies program.
 

Children's Hospital Announces DAISY Award Winner

National Program Helps Celebrate Nurses Week
 
KNOXVILLE—In celebration of Nurses Week, Children's Hospital implemented the DAISY Award, which recognizes nurses for the education, training, and skill they put in their work and the compassion with which they deliver care.
 
Children's Hospital's first DAISY award recipient was Amy Hill, RN, a nurse on the third floor (inpatient unit) at Children's Hospital. Her colleagues nominated her for this award and stated in their entry that Hill is "a diligent, dedicated nurse whose expertise is very valued on our floor." She has also received many compliments from patients and colleagues commending her on the kindness and patience she displays on a daily basis.
 
The DAISY Award (and DAISY Foundation) was founded in 2001 to honor J. Patrick Barnes, who died of complications Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a bleeding disorder in which the blood doesn't clot as it should. Now, nurses in more than 500 healthcare organizations throughout the country have been given this award for their hard work and dedication to the nursing profession. Children's Hospital is the first hospital in the Knoxville area to honor nurses with this award.
 
DAISY award winners receive a plaque proclaiming her or him an "Extraordinary Nurse," a DAISY award pin and a unique stone sculpture hand-carved by the Shona people in Zimbabwe entitled "A Healer's Touch."
 

Fort Sanders Cancer Program Receives 3-Year Reaccreditation

KNOXVILLE—The Commission on Cancer has awarded a three year Accreditation with Commendation to Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. This honor recognizes Fort Sanders' commitment to improve the quality of patient care through a variety of cancer-related programs.
 
Fort Sanders was recognized for their focus on prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease, support services, and end-of-life care. Many of these services are performed in concert with Thompson Cancer Survival Center.
 
The surveyor praised Fort Sanders for their excellent nursing education programs and for their outstanding efforts in quality improvement, prevention and early detection programs.
 

Dawson Announces Retirement, Successor Named

MARYVILLE—Blount Memorial Hospital administrator Joseph Dawson announced that he would retire from the top post at Blount Memorial, effective Wednesday, June 30. Dawson has served as the hospital's administrator since January 1985, and as assistant administrator for seven years prior to taking the administrator position.
 
Board of directors president Robert Redwine commented on the announcement and said, "Joe has been a leader, starting with his early days in Blount County, continuing through today. He has been very unselfish with his time and his talents, which have made this hospital and community better places for all who live and work here."
 
Redwine, on behalf of the nine-member board of directors, also announced that Blount Memorial's current associate administrator and chief operating officer Don Heinemann has been named the hospital's new administrator, effective Thursday, July 1.
 
Heinemann holds a bachelor of science degree in business from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., and a master of science degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
 
Heinemann, a Leadership Blount graduate and founding board member of A Secret Safe Place for Newborns of Tennessee, is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association, an affiliate of the Tennessee Hospital Association and board member of the Tennessee Hospital Association Subsidiary, Solutions Group.
 
Prior to joining the Blount Memorial leadership team, Heinemann was an administrative resident, administrative intern and evening administrator at Roanoke Memorial Hospital (Carillion Health System) in Roanoke, Va.
 

Parkwest Medical Center Hosts Inaugural "Knoxville Hot Shots 3-on-3 Outdoor Classic" Benefit for Peninsula Hospital

KNOXVILLE—Parkwest Medical Center invites you to get your game on at its inaugural "Knoxville Hot Shots 3-on-3 Outdoor Classic" basketball tournament Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1.
 
There are three participation divisions: (1) experienced male players (2) men's open division, and (3) women. Participants must be at least 18 years of age as of the tournament. In addition to play-off games, there will be a free-throw competition and a three-point competition. The cost to enter is $140 for a four-person team or $35 per player.
 
Registration closes at midnight on July 15. Online registration for the tournament is available at www.active.com. Those who wish to mail their payment can download the registration form at www.treatedwell.com/basketball.
 
In addition to the tournament, the event will feature food and other activities for participants and spectators alike.
 
The event is rain or shine and will be held on the Parkwest campus. It benefits behavioral health services provided to children in the greater Knoxville area at Peninsula Hospital.
 

KCBC Golf Tournament Raises $23,000 for the Kim Rowden Breast Cancer Memorial Fund

KNOXVILLE–The 9th Annual Kim Rowden Golf Tournament, presented by Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center, raised $23,000 to aid in the fight against breast cancer. The proceeds benefit the non-profit Kim Rowden Memorial Fund which provides screenings for women without financial resources and free mammograms for uninsured women.
 
"This was the most money we have raised for the memorial fund to date," said Dr. Kamilia Kozlowski, CEO of KCBC. "Thanks so much to all the players and the generosity of our sponsors. Because of them we will not have to turn anyone away who is in need of medical services but doesn't have any insurance." Dr. Kozlowski also got a hole in one on the 17th hole.
 
The golf tournament was held at Toqua Golf Course in Tellico Village. It was sponsored by BARD Biopsy Systems, Tennessee Cancer Specialists, CSK Technologies, East Tennessee Healthcare Center, Supersonic Imaging, Synergy, Appalachia Business Communications, WIVK and First Tennessee Bank.
